Foursquare. Facebook Places. Shopkick. You check in. Tell your friends. Maybe get rewarded for it.
While companies are trying to figure out how to win the GPS check-in war, other people are trying to figure out where else this idea can extend. In fact, Meebo introduced the concept of Website check-ins as a new feature for their Meebo bar. Now this is fascinating. Because rather than opening a specific app, the check-in functionality will be built in to the Website design itself.
Why check in? Well, there could be intrinsic motivations the site develops. But, if you run across a cool site, or have a favorite you’re proud of visiting, you’ll shout it out to tell your friends. This has really interesting possibilities.
