In late June, the blogosphere discovered that Netflix had been looking for an “Android Video Playback Expert”. Connecting the dots, this made it look like Netflix was looking to create an Android app for streaming movies.
Now, we’ve been covering Android’s recent smartphone surge to dominance lately at Windy City Strategies, since 1 in 3 U.S. smart phones now runs the Android operating system.
But what does this mean for the big picture? Well, in the streaming video niche, this should further Netflix’s market position over competitors like Hulu Plus and Redbox. But, the big thing to keep in mind here is Google TV and its Android integration, which could turn any Google TV-ready device into a Netflix-ready device. Right now, it looks like Netflix is building a saddle for the right horse.
