The FCC’s recent technical decisions out of Washington have led some to believe that Super Wi-Fi may be on its way.
This legislation concerns the unused spectrum between broadcast television channels. Now that television has gone completely digital, Google and Microsoft have been pushing the government to open up these open “white spaces”. In fact, they, along with Dell, Intel, Philips, HP, Earthlink and Samsung are all members of the White Spaces Coalition, a group that has been lobbying the government to bring a whole new level of wireless broadband to the nation.
The technology behind Super Wi-Fi is the same as traditional Wi-Fi, but would now be able to utilize the unused television frequencies between 54-698 MHz. We may be only a few years off from 80 Mbps long-range wireless speeds. And that would change everything once again.
