If you want to sell books, make it onto Oprah’s book club. If you want to sell anything else (buckyballs included), advertise in Google‘s logo.
Google recently celebrated the 25th anniversary of the spherical molecule, buckminsterfullerune. To celebrate, they replaced the second “O” in their logo with a special doodle in the shape of this sphere. If a user clicked on this sphere, they were taken to www.getbuckyballs.com, a site that sells a magnetic desk toy in this shape.
In one day, this link helped the site rack up more than $250,000 in sales, with more than 2,000,000 unique visitors coming to the page. Now, if instead of Adwords, you could pay Google to get in their logo, I can’t imagine what they’d charge for that CPC.
