Remind me to sell my stock in Garmin. Not because Garmin isn’t the current king of GPS. But because Google‘s about to start beating them at their own game – for free.
Not only have Google Maps applications quickly been catching up with Garmin’s functionality, but now, Google Maps for Mobile 4.5 on Android offers Walking Navigation (in beta). This is the perfect walking GPS application when you’re in an unfamiliar city, because you can now use Google‘s Street View navigation to guide you to your destination.
So, not only will you be able to find the safest and most direct pedestrian paths around the city, but with Places overlay on the new Google Maps search bar, you’ll be able to search for local restaurants or activities, filter these results by distance or user ratings, and see prices categorized with dollar signs.
Even in a new city, you’ll never have to make a bad decision again.
