We always like to report Twitter gaffes here at Windy City Strategies, to help prevent you from making the same social media mistakes. But, today’s report isn’t a gaffe, but a criminal act. The Twitter account @foxnewspolitics was hacked by an Internet group who claims to have ties with the prominent activist group, Anonymous. They then used the account to tweet out false reports of the assassination of President Barack Obama.
That’s a whole new level of crazy. Even those who softly support the majority of Anonymous’ actions (in the same way you quietly root for the Boondock Saints to take out the trash), it’s impossible to see anything here beyond creating mayhem for the sake of creating mayhem.
A spokesperson for the group claimed that “Fox News was selected because we figured their security would be just as much of a joke as their reporting.” The group’s Twitter account, @ScriptKiddi3s, has been suspended. But, hacking fears have to be at the tops of company fear lists right now.
