Get Rid of Unwanted, Negative SEO

How to Minimize Negative SEO

Negative SEO is a lot more art than science.  Making someone else “look bad” requires looking at their individual situation and identifying weaknesses.  However, there are some general tips you can take to minimize the amount of bad and low quality links your site will get, and stop handing things out on a silver platter.

RSS Advertising Links

RSS links are never strong and low quality at best.  Google usually ignored and discounted them.  Due to Google’s new lower threshold for negative links creating problems, it is recommended not to use this technique.

DMCA Take-down Notices

You don’t need to spend all of your time engaging in the pursuit of DMCA justice; just take care of the biggest offenders every 3-6 months.

Who Can Help

The Overview

  • Understand Google’s algorithm is changing and sometimes you will need to adapt to accommodate those changes.

  • Stop making theft of your content easy.  Realize you can’t prevent it 100% but stop handing it to people on a silver platter.

  • Stop automatically manufacturing low quality links:  They will probably do more harm than good.

  • DMCA violations:  Go after the biggest offenders every few months.

  • Do everything within your power to resist the temptation to avoid low quality links.  Everyone gets them and it is unavoidable, but don’t encourage the practice.

  • Find an internet marketing company to help you with your site.

The 3 Most Effective Strategies

You have finally created your companies website!  Great, now what to do now?

A website is completely pointless without visitors.  Likewise, a business is completely pointless without customers.  You will make ore sales with more traffic to your site.  A simple concept that’s difficult to achieve.  Just like you would only trust a trained lifeguard to supervise your kids at the pool, you should seek out a trustworthy trained professional to help you achieve maximum traffic (and maximum profits) to your site.

Windy City Strategies offers quality services and techniques that will expand your business and increase the amount of people that visit your website.

The 3 Most Effective Strategies are Listed Below:

Search Engine Optimization (SEO) is the process of increasing your website’s visibility in search engine’s organic results through optimizing your pages with the keyword phrases people are likely to search for.  How often do you look past the first couple of pages when searching on Google?  Most people don’t even look past the first page when searching.  This means that unless your site is on the first page, you are losing potential customers.  Though often time consuming, SEO is an important strategy to increase the amount of traffic on your site.  If you haven’t already optimized your website for search engines, it might take several months to see significant results with SEO.

Blogging allows you to offer original content on your site that draws new visitors.  When you write a blog for your website, you are constantly posting new pages that Google recognizes.  The more pages you have, the higher Google will put your website on the result pages.  You can even make links inside of your blog that allow direct links to your website and add more pages to your site.  Creating links withing a blog will also give viewers the opportunity to find your website while searching for something else that you happened to blog about.

Pay Per Click (PPC) uses internet advertising to bring in traffic to your website from search engines like Google.  It is the easiest way to improve your rank on the result list of a search engine.  Every time someone clicks on your website, you pay a fixed amount to the company providing you the service.  Your website will appear in front of your competitors on the search engine results as an ad.  Although it is the easiest way to gain more traffic, it is difficult to set up if you are not knowledgeable on the subject.

Contact an experienced internet marketing company today that will allow you to sit back with ease and watch the flow of new customers trafficking on your website.  Windy City Strategies can make that happen.

Five Common SEO Mistakes With Maile Ohye at Google

I came across this great video with Maile Ohye, the Developer Programs Tech Lead at Google, about five common SEO mistakes and how to remedy them.  Very interesting about how Google has changed from what we call “old” SEO techniques to new straight forward methods.

1.  Having no value proposition – Differentiate yourself from the competition and just don’t assume that you should be #1, because without the ability to separate yourself from others will get you nowhere.  Offer things like free estimates or if you have unbelievable customer service, highlight it.  Without value, customers won’t recommend your product or service or worse, never come back.

2.  Segmented approach – Don’t create a marketing campaign that customers can’t find when they come to your site.  You need to keep their attention and grab them with your knowledge too.

3.  Time consuming workarounds –  Keep up with best practices and avoid hacks that won’t simplify development.

4.  Caught in SEO trends – Stop looking for that magic trick that will boost your rankings, but instead focus of the fundamentals that will bring lasting customers to the website like creating readable, compelling and informative content that keeps a customers attention.

5.  Slow iteration – Stay agile, because if you create an environment that makes testing or making improvements on the website difficult you fall behind.

Will Rising Facebook PPC Ad Prices Send People Back to Google?

Facebook advertising has always been an interesting sell. Their ability to hyper-target individuals based on specific interests is simply incredible. The low cost-per-click ad rate is simply incredible as well. Here’s why. Because the ads are never timely. They don’t react to searches. On Facebook, you don’t search for “golf club discounts” and see an ad for golf clubs pop up. The ads are random, based on what you “like” in your profile along with your demographic statistics.

In short, Facebook ads can be relevant, but are rarely timely. Whereas, Google ads react to your specific search entry. And therefore, they tend to cost a little more. But now, it turns out that Facebook’s CPC ad costs have risen by 22% this past quarter. Why? Because you’re competing with more and more advertisers – specifically, all of them! You’re not competing with other golf vendors. You’re competing with publishing companies trying to sell their books based on other books the individual has “liked”. You’re competing with Higher Education institutions trying to persuade people back to school based on their most recent level of education. As advertisers continue to enter the Facebook arena, we’re all competing for the exact same audience at the exact same time. And I wonder if that will mean an exodus back to Google for some advertisers?

Will the Google +1 Button Change the Web?

Search engine optimizers everywhere are feverishly working to understand exactly how Google +1 can benefit their site listings in search results. So, let’s give a run down.

Google +1 is a Facebook “like” equivalent. Similarly to how Bing search results incorporate Facebook “likes”, Google search results incorporate +1’s. If your friends, family or the aggregate Internet community has +1’d a page, you will see it in your search results, when signed in to Google. The idea is to screen Google’s search results before diving in. If a friend or the aggregate community have socially approved a site, there’s a tacit approval of the content that follows.

Google PPC ads will also incorporate +1 social approval when possible. Now, while Google Buzz, Google’s last attempt at social relevancy, was deemed a failure – due to non-use, there’s a legitimate fear that Google +1 may have the same fate. But, bottom line, this is a new ranking signal. Odds are that Google will prioritize it in order to promote it. Google is still 80% of the search market. Yeah, I’m going to start incorporating it. And it’s important to note that the Google +1 button is customizable for the technical Web programmers among us.

Microsoft AdCenter Moving Local

Microsoft adCenter is looking to help Bing advertisers reach local users, with new features including radius targeting, local search attributes and something entitled “Bing Vision”. Many of these features are simply playing catch-up to Google AdWords.

For instance, the ability to target specific radiuses, 5-100 miles away from a city, listing the merchant’s address and phone number. “Bing Vision”, however, is the new one. Bing Vision helps customers already in store, further investigate product information, reviews and prices.

As Bing continues to chip away at Google’s market share, and more and more advertisers start to take notice, kudos to Microsoft AdCenter for not only catching up, but looking to innovate.

Bing Plays the Kid Card to Gain New Search Users

Microsoft’s playing dirty. They’ve created an ingenius ploy to get more parents, teachers and grandparents to give their Bing search engine a test-drive. And it’s the “won’t somebody think of the children?” card.

Individuals who decide to make Bing their default search provider will get to donate $3 of Microsoft’s money to the school project of their choice. Users simply have to visit the “Help Bing Give to Schools” page and click on the button that says “Choose Bing and Donate”.

Then, a check box will pop-up saying, “Make this my default search provider,” and you will need to provide an email address in order to get a donation code. After getting the code from your e-mail inbox, you simply pick a school project at DonorsChoose.org, a partner with Bing in this program, and type in the code to apply Microsoft’s donation.

Now, this is a really clever idea. Because there’s no real downside for the user, besides the fact that it’s a fairly complicated process for such a small donation. But, anything for the sake of helping children, right? And through the power of social media, this opportunity could get viral quickly.

But the real question is, will these people like the Bing experience, or immediately switch back to their default browser before even giving it a shot. It’s almost like a PPC campaign with a $3 bid for a click-through to see what Bing’s all about. Microsoft obviously believes they can get a good return on that investment.

Easier Google AdWords Conversion Tracking Provides PPC Help

Google AdWords is providing even more PPC help with a new even easier conversion tracking interface. Implementing, monitoring and troubleshooting the way you track conversions is now as easy as it has ever been. With conversion tracking being so important to quantify your results it is no wonder that Google decided to make it as easy as they possibly could.

Now let’s take a look at how Google decided to make their Google AdWords marketing even better by updating the Google AdWords conversion tracking interface.

First, let’s login to your account. At the top of the page you have several categories. Go over to reporting and then scroll down to conversions, and click on it. Once you are on the conversions page, you are going to see 3 new tabs pop up. Conversions, webpages, and code. Let’s discuss these.

1. Conversions – This is where you can see all the information about the Google AdWords conversion tracking you implemented, but there are other sections to discuss. “Tracking Status” is where you can look to see if you are tracking properly. “Tracking Purpose,” which let’s you know what you are tracking. A lead, signup, purchase/sale, or view of a key page. Lastly there is “Action Name,” which you can name the conversion you are tracking.

2. Webpages – This is where you will see where on the website the conversion tracking was placed and coming from. This is great information for a PPC management company, because we do not place that code on the site most of the time, so now we can see where it came from.

3. Code – Lastly, but certainly not least, this is where the code is. Without the code, everything we have talked about does not work. Here you can also change the value of a conversion based on price increases or decreases.

If you are not currently utilizing conversion tracking in your Google AdWords management campaign, now is the easiest it has ever been to do it right. If you ever need help or have questions, please contact Google and they can help you, call Windy City Strategies and we can help you, or get more information from this Google blog post.

Why Utilize A PPC Management Company?

More and more companies are turning to a PPC management company to help jump start an online advertising campaign. Building, managing and staying ahead of the ever changing search engine marketplace takes time, and if you don’t have the proper knowledge, you can spend a lot of money without any return on investment.

Hiring a PPC management company is extremely cost effective for most companies too. If you were to hire someone that knew how to build and maintain a pay per click management campaign, you are looking at around $60- $70K minimum in salary. Now a PPC management company normally charges a percentage on budget spent, for example, Windy City Strategies charges 13% of budget, so if you spent $50K per year, which is a healthy budget, you would only pay $6500 for the year. How can you beat that? This includes two certified account managers and several assistants at your disposal.

Certifications are extremely important when looking for a PPC management company, because you want to make sure they know their field. These certifications currently are utilized by Google and MSN, while Yahoo had one, but at this time has decided to stop. These certification logos should be placed on the companies website showing that they are a certified AdWords management company or Microsoft adExcellence Member and clickable. The click should take you to the page at Google or MSN showing the companies certification. Stay away from companies that do not have that link. That means they are not certified and most likely took the logo from someone else’s website.
