Internet Explorer Gains in Worldwide Browser Usage

Wednesday, August 4th, 2010

I don’t know how it’s possible, but according to NetMarketShare, Internet Explorer, the leading U.S. broswer, has actually gained 1% market share since May. This gain comes directly at the expense of Firefox and Google Chrome market losses.

If anything, this proves how important being first-to-market really is, even though Netscape technically had the early browser lead in the 90s. By pushing Internet Explorer to the masses with the monopoly popularity of the Windows operating system, Internet Explorer has now held the browser lead for 15 years.

But arguably, in terms of speed, ease of use, privacy and features, Internet Explorer isn’t the winner.

Firefox is the browser of choice for Web developers. Opera is the browser of choice for those obsessed with speed. And Google Chrome is the browser of choice for those who want the latest and greatest features and extensions.

But Internet Explorer continues to grow, simply because it was first?

Firefox 4 Beta is Now Available for Download

Thursday, July 8th, 2010

The wait for the newest edition of the world’s second most popular browser is finally over. Mozilla has released Firefox 4 Beta for preview download available now.

Many of the upgrades are back-end changes designed to improve the lives of Web developers everywhere – a major market for Firefox due to its high ability for customization.

But, as a user, you’ll notice some immediate improvements in your experience. You can now search for and switch to tabs that are already open in the Smart Location Bar. The stop and reload buttons have been combined into a single button for Windows, Mac and Linux. A Bookmarks Button has replaced the Bookmarks Toolbar by default (but can be switched back if you prefer). Crash protection has been added when a crash occurs in Adobe Flash, Apple Quicktime or Microsoft Silverlight plugins. And native support is now included for the video format of the future, HD HTML5 WebM.

Mozilla Firefox Hits 2 Billionth Add-On Download

Monday, July 5th, 2010

Since 2005, Mozilla Firefox has been a leading browser choice for Web developers. Precisely because of how its open-source format has allowed for such high customization.

5 years later, Firefox has reached its 2-billionth add-on download. From ad blockers and HTML tools, to security features and site translators, Firefox add-ons help make the browsing experience more personal and more powerful.

Yet, Google Chrome’s recent popularity may change things in this space. Google recently released a new category of feature extensions in order to help to make Chrome more accessible. It will be interesting to see if Chrome can ween over developers who have fallen in love with Firefox over the years.
